👀 Look

A plum-dark leather sphere with a jaunty green cap. Squeeze until it yields: inside, five to seven snow-white segments arranged like a peeled mandarin made of silk.

👃 Aroma

Delicate — peach blossom and vanilla.

👅 Taste

The reason it's called the queen of fruits: peach + lychee + strawberry with perfect sweet-acid balance.

Sweetness: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

🍽️ How to eat it
Press the equator between palms until the rind cracks, twist, eat the segments. The number of petals on the flower-shaped mark underneath equals the number of segments inside — check, it's true. Tourist mistake: cutting deep with a knife and staining the flesh purple with rind juice.
🧃 Drinks
Too precious to blend.
🏪 Buying tips
Rind should yield slightly — rock-hard means old and dry inside. Larger caps, fresher fruit. Check for amber resin spots (fine) versus mold at the stem (not fine).
💰 Price
3.500 COP (our vendor's quote). Confirm unit — usually per pound.
🌎 Local lore
Legend says Queen Victoria offered a reward for a fresh mangosteen — hence "queen of fruits." The purple rind stains like ink and was historically used as dye.
⚠️ Watch out

Rind juice stains permanently. Don't wear the white shirt. (Why did you bring a white shirt to a fruit market?)

🎉 Fun fact
Mangosteen seeds form without fertilization (apomixis) — the fruit reproduces by copying itself, so essentially every mangosteen tree on Earth is a genetically near-identical clone.
Worth trying?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely — many travelers' single favorite bite at the market.
